  Newington

Coach: Jeff Brunetti (5th year)

Last year: 9-5-4, lost in second round of Class LL tournament

Key losses: Chris Kapuscinski, Mitchell Ambruso,  Alex Skoniezny, Greg Zydanowicz, Brian Goncalves, Kurt Werner, Kurt Swenor, Ryan Newton

Key returnees: Bradley Mitchel (sr. D), Jordan Aprea (sr. M), Paolo Amenta (sr. F), Zack Harmon (soph. G), Blake Mamaclay (jr. M), Andrew Rucci (sr. F)

Outlook: Kapuscinski was one of the best goalkeepers in the area over the last four years, and he will be the toughest hole to fill out of the eight starters and 16 seniors the Indians lost to graduation this summer. Ambruso was the leading scorer and captain, and the Indians hope Rucci and Amenta can make new waves up front.

“We often struggle to put the ball in the back of the net,” Brunetti said. “We are completely capable, but we have yet to make it happen during competition.”

Mitchel is a strong one-on-one defender who started last year, while Aprea and Mamclay should give the midfield mental and physical strength. Aprea will be a key to Newington’s transition game and will have to get the ball on Rucci’s feet. Amenta could be the team’s breakout star this season on offense, but Newington will have to get contributions from a number of new faces, particularly Harmon, to succeed.

“Collectively we play well and are difficult to break down most of the time, Brunetti said. “Even though this season we are returning only three starters, I have complete confidence in our incoming athletes to meet the expectations set forth and blaze a new path.”
